Opinion -
ColorBurst RIP is, I feel, a really good product providing for both fine art photo print quailty and, as a full Postscript RIP, it can also be used for proofing images before they go to press. ColorBurst is remarkably easy to use [far simpler than the Epson driver and with better control over paper usage].
Many RIPS are designed specifically for prepress and design use, this means that they do not need to give very smooth fine detail since they are intended to simulate offset press, which has quite a coarse screen.
ColorBurst has very fine screening and the capability to reproduce extremely fine detail which is lost when using the printer driver software.
ColorBurst is very easy to use, many RIP softwares are not. ColorBurst gives ink savings along with much reduced metamerism due to an intelligent use of black to stabilise the image. Thus, images are more stable under differing lighting.
The ColorBurst RIP includes Spectralvision Pro, a very high end profiling software using the profiling engine from X-Rite Monaco Profiler, this includes full linearisation and profiling tools so that with the addition of a low cost spectrophotometer a user can build their own very high quality paper profiles.
Individual paper based linearisation and ink-limiting - [a form of pre-profiling calibration] can make for really accurate profiles. Basically, better printed [more linear] profiling charts give better profiles. The Epson driver has no facility to provide any paper calibration other than by using the provided "paper settings" in the driver. When using non- Epson papers with pre x900 series machines, this is a pretty serious shortcoming. And, in fact, even when printing on Epson's own papers, proper well controlled calibration of the basic ink on paper capabilities will often mean better profiles to add to the other RIP advantages.

Better print quality (by a long way, clearer detail, better tonal range, better colour).

absolutely
i wasn't sure about getting a RIP for my 3800 several years ago. but i wasn't totally pleased with the results of printing certain files on certain paper with this printer. neil simply suggested that i download the colorburst demo and give it a try. i was sold!
i produce a lot of my own fine art prints on art rag paper (hahnemuhle or innova) for exhibition and of course print sales. people are always delighted with the quality of the prints. i even get some galleries asking if i can produce some prints for them from time to time, so impressed are they with the results of the 3800 and colorburst rip on the right paper.
if you're in doubt, give the demo a go
Better print stability under differing lighting due to proper use of black to underlay colour (Black Generation or GCR). Simpler to use (much simpler than the printer's driver software).
Lots of paper profiles (very good ones) included, ColorBurst provides superior colourmanagement on a whole range of supported papers.
Don't confuse a full capable Photo Quality ICC compliant RIP which includes full linearisation and calibration features with an enhanced RGB print driver like some so called "Photo RIPs". Or with cut down postscript converters with names like like Designer Edition. A great number of misguided RIP purchasers are left with an unused box in the cupboard because their RIP is missing good colour management or perhaps requires time extensive consuming expert on-site set-up to attain good paper profiles.
